Hi all
i wanted to ask your guys opinion on Blender for CGI, VFX, and animation.
Now i know that 3Ds Max, Maya and so on are the industry standard but there price is way out of most peoples budgets especially the indie guys.
so i have been playing around with blender for quite some time, or more looking into it than playing with it but i wanted to get some other people in the industries opinions on using blender.
some of the things that i have seens regarding it is that it has a lot larger learning curve that say 3Ds max does.
what you guys think about it?

I love blender, but have sort of progressed on to 3DS Max. I would say there is absolutely nothing to stop you using Blender, if you are gonna get better results than trying to use 3DS Max. Not sure about the learning curve - I find Blender easier actually, and the real time rendering with the Cycles Render Engine makes materials really fun to do in Blender.
Only thing Max has going for it, is the universal support with other programs and that if you learn the methods 3DS Max use, other programs tend to be similar. Blender uses a funky set of keyboard shortcuts and methods by comparison to all Autodesk style "industry standard" programs.

I agree yes - All 3d application are really the same with different interfaces. I also use 3dsmax, but Blender is really amazing!! You can even do compositing and video editing right inside of Blender!
Don't know if you guys have seen this - was one of the Blender Open Movie projects a few years back - everything was done in Blender!

I have seen sintel and all the other ones that the blender foundation has made all the way back to elephants dream. i love the open source of blender and i do really like the program, i do really love 3ds max tho, i have an education license for it and do like it over blender i just dont want to get into trouble for using it on projects so id rather learn blender and once i can afford it get 3ds max.
